Treating people as people
Human rights are fundamental principles.
They allow the individual freedom to lead a dignified and independent
life, free from abuse and violations. They are based on rules of
human behaviour common across diverse cultures. They are at the
heart of stable, peaceful and equal societies.
The link between human rights and UK companies
goes further than obeying the law. Companies need to consider not
only how they treat their own employees and the communities around
them but how their suppliers treat their employees and how they
relate to authorities when people’s rights are at risk. The
introduction of the UK Human Rights Act in October 2000 means that
all UK companies need to be aware of their responsibilities regarding
the rights of their employees.
